Why would anyone do this?

So I was riding into town today with Tripod and we passed a 70’s era (1974?) AMC Gremlin. It was all beatered out and looked much worse than the one below. However, get this – it had new car temporary tags on it.  That means someone bought the thing. Someone actually paid money. Perhaps the seller ended up paying the buyer for it.
